- The tariffs were imposed on 59 countries and the European Union, citing forced labor issues.
- The lawsuit includes states like New York, California, and Illinois, among others.
- The Trump administration previously faced legal challenges regarding its tariff policies.
Twenty-five states sued the Trump administration over its latest tariffs, claiming they are a pretext for replacing import taxes that were struck down by the Supreme Court earlier this year. The tariffs, which took effect last month, are aimed at 59 countries and the European Union, with the administration arguing that these nations have not done enough to address imports produced by forced labor.
The lawsuit was announced by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who stated that the administration is attempting to illegally raise taxes on families and businesses. The states involved in the lawsuit include Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
The new tariffs follow a previous Supreme Court ruling that limited the administration's authority to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. In response to the loss, the Trump administration had briefly implemented temporary tariffs before introducing the current tariffs under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows for sanctions against countries engaging in unfair trade practices.
