A magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook southern Peru on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It struck at 1 p.m. local time and was centered 38 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho in the Parinacochas province of the Ayacucho region, at a depth of 66 kilometers.
Civil defense chief Luis Vásquez said two people were injured while evacuating their homes in Coracora, the provincial capital. Authorities also reported damage to homes, health centers and a school in several districts across Ayacucho and Cusco.
The quake was felt in multiple southern regions, including Ica, Arequipa, Huancavelica, Apurimac and Cusco, as well as in the capital, Lima. The Peruvian Navy said there was no tsunami threat.
