A South Carolina police officer was killed and another injured in a shooting Saturday at a park in Columbia following a call about a domestic dispute. The deceased officer, 29-year-old Christopher DeLong, had been with the police department for two years and leaves behind a wife and two young children, according to Columbia Police Chief W.H. "Skip" Holbrook. The second officer, David Dymock, was in stable condition.
The shooting unfolded after a woman called police around 9:30 a.m. reporting that a man subject to a restraining order was destroying property at her home. Officer DeLong arrived and learned the suspect had left the residence. After the woman provided a description of the suspect and vehicle, DeLong left the home but initiated a call about a suspicious person around 10:30 a.m. after spotting a man matching the description near a vehicle. Officer Dymock arrived as backup, and minutes later radioed that officers "were hit and a suspect was down."
The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Adam Tyler Dowdy, also died in the shooting. Dowdy had a lengthy criminal record with arrests across at least four states, facing charges including disorderly conduct, contempt of court, public intoxication, possession of a controlled substance, and probation violations. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division announced it would investigate the shooting.
