LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — President Rodrigo Paz activated a plan on Thursday to reinforce security at the border with Brazil in order to fight organized crime, which has increased in the Andean nation amid a war between Brazilian cartels competing for drug trafficking routes.
Paz launched the measure from the Guayaramerín region, located in northern Bolivia and neighboring Brazil, where Bolivian police conducted land patrols while the Naval Force operated boats along the river shared by the two nations.
Operations were also taking place in three other Bolivian regions—Beni, Pando, and Santa Cruz—which share a 3,400-kilometer border with Brazil. This comes days after a shooting incident in another border locality that resulted in four arrests, including two members of the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) involved in a narcotics route dispute with their rival, Comando Vermelho (CV).
Experts indicate that these routes were operated by the alleged Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset, who was captured in Bolivia and handed over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in March.
