A drone strike ignited a fire at an electrical facility in the city of Zawiya, Libya, on Wednesday, rendering the facility inoperable. The state-run General Electricity Company reported that the power substation was completely burned down, leading to outages across the southern parts of the city, which is located about 47 kilometers west of Tripoli.
Zawiya, home to critical energy infrastructure including Libya’s largest oil refinery, has been targeted by a series of drone strikes affecting oil and power facilities. The Prime Minister of one of Libya's rival governments denounced the attacks as a serious crime and vowed to hold those responsible accountable.
In response to the escalating violence, General Electric withdrew its teams from the power plant until security conditions improve. The attacks come amid rising tensions between the government of western Libya and local militia forces controlling Zawiya, highlighting the ongoing instability in the country since the fall of Muammar Gadhafi in 2011.
