On August 11, 2023, the ENS DAO officially voted to approve the 'Next Era of ENS DAO' proposal. This proposal aims to establish a legal entity to represent Ethereum's domain name protocol in the real world, addressing operational challenges faced by the DAO.
The final version of the proposal ensures that approximately 54.6 million ENS tokens remain under the control of the DAO, with a one-time transfer of 1 million tokens designated for future employee compensation at the foundation. Additionally, the operations wallet containing around $16 million will also stay under DAO control.
The governance structure has been refined to separate the roles of the protocol, foundation, and development company, allowing ENS Labs to focus on product development while the foundation manages the endowment fund with strict transaction oversight. This restructuring reflects a response to past governance challenges within the Web3 industry.
