On August 8, PANews reported that the EU has decided to revise the MiCA framework to better accommodate non-EU stablecoin issuers such as Tether. This decision has been accelerated by the introduction of the U.S. GENIUS Act and the proactive measures taken by the Trump administration regarding stablecoins.
Patrick Hansen, Circle’s EU policy head, highlighted that the current MiCA regime contains significant regulatory gaps, which could leave European users either unprotected or excluded from the market.
In addition to addressing access rules for non-EU issuers, the EU is also considering incorporating emerging technologies, including tokenized payments and deposits, into the revised framework.
An EU diplomat noted that revisiting the MiCA framework has become inevitable, especially since it was approved in May 2023 and many of its provisions are now outdated in light of industry developments.
