Gauff supports WTA gene-testing, criticizes its impact on the trans community

Coco Gauff has voiced her support for the WTA Tour's newly introduced gene-testing policy while also criticizing its potential to generate animosity toward the trans community. Speaking at the Canadian Open after her first-round victory, Gauff acknowledged the importance of fairness in women's sports but expressed concern over how the discussion has become politicized.

Gauff stated, "So, yes, I guess I kind of agree with trying to protect the fairness in women’s sports. But I also do not like the attack that it is creating." She noted that some individuals may use the policy as a reason to target the trans community, which she finds troubling.

The WTA's policy, introduced last month, requires players to undergo gene-testing for the SRY gene, which is typically associated with male sex development. This policy is part of the requirements for competing at the 2028 Olympics. Gauff raised questions about the transparency of the process, mentioning that some players were unaware of the new policy until its announcement.

The WTA has stated that the policy aims to differentiate between biological sex and gender identity, and there is no intent to disrespect anyone's gender identity. The introduction of mandatory gene screening has faced criticism from human rights experts and activist groups, who argue it could have negative implications for athletes.
