- Coco Gauff expressed understanding of the WTA Tour's new gene-testing policy.
- She criticized the politicization of the issue, which she believes fosters animosity towards the trans community.
- Gauff emphasized the need for a more nuanced conversation on the topic.
- The WTA's policy requires gene-testing for players competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
- The testing focuses on the SRY gene, associated with male sex development.
Coco Gauff understands the reasoning behind the WTA Tour’s newly introduced gene-testing policy. However, she does not favor how politicized the discussion becomes in generating animosity towards the trans community.
Speaking to reporters at the Canadian Open in Toronto, Gauff provided what she called a nuanced answer following her opening-match win over Kayla Day. She stated, "So, yes, I guess I kind of agree with trying to protect the fairness in women’s sports. But I also do not like the attack that it is creating."
The Women’s Tennis Association introduced one-off mandatory gene-testing for all players as a requirement to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The testing focuses on the SRY gene, a segment of DNA typically found on the Y chromosome that indicates the presence of testes.
Gauff questioned the transparency of the introduction of the process, noting that some players only found out about the new policy when it was announced. The WTA stated that the policy distinguishes between biological sex and gender identity, asserting there is no intent to disrespect or question anyone's dignity.
