WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on Saturday that it expects all field officers and agents to be equipped with body cameras by the end of August, marking a rapid expansion that could provide unprecedented visual documentation of federal immigration enforcement operations.
However, whether the public will be able to view those images will largely depend on ICE. The agency defended its body camera policy amid questions regarding provisions that allow ICE management to withhold or delay the release of recordings indefinitely following serious injuries or deaths in custody.
Interim Director David J. Venturella stated that the restrictions are intended to protect investigations and privacy, complying with federal law and aligning with policies of other federal security agencies. Venturella's statement came in response to Associated Press coverage of ICE's policy, including a provision that calls for expedited disclosure of recordings following serious injuries or deaths in custody when it is determined to be in the agency's "best interests."
The agency has been under increased scrutiny since a fatal shooting in July of a 25-year-old motorist in Maine by an officer with a history of violent behavior. Days earlier, another ICE officer shot and killed a housing contractor in Houston. Neither shooting was recorded with body cameras.
