Deadly Israeli strikes in Gaza on Wednesday raised fresh doubts about whether new U.S. efforts could move forward a fragile ceasefire in the territory. The attacks came shortly after U.S. negotiators reportedly urged Israel to scale back operations.
Local hospitals and the Palestinian Red Crescent said at least 10 people were killed in the Wednesday strikes. Witnesses and a Hamas official also said Israeli troops crossed the ceasefire line in southern Gaza and detained a Hamas police colonel at dawn.
The Israeli military said one strike in the Nuseirat area targeted a Hamas commander who took part in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel. It also said another strike hit four Hamas militants at a police station in Gaza City whom it described as preparing attacks on Israeli troops.
