But making 'Cathedral,' a graphic novel with an accompanying original album out Friday, was truly a family affair. He enlisted his godson Daniel Davies and his son Cody to collaborate on the album, and turned to his publisher wife to help with the graphic novel.
Carpenter, who is also a prolific composer, drew inspiration for the project from a dream about an abandoned downtown Los Angeles church with an elevator that goes to hell. He expressed a desire to find alternative, less expensive ways to stay creatively fulfilled in an industry he feels has become overly corporate.
The album features spooky instrumental tracks that evoke some of Carpenter's iconic classics, such as the theme from 'Halloween.' Carpenter, his son, and Davies discussed their artistic process and concerns over artificial intelligence during an interview with The Associated Press.
