Just one round into the Premier League season, Manchester United and Tottenham had their preseason optimism quickly tempered by lopsided defeats. United, a 20-time English champion, fell 2-0 away to promoted Hull, while Tottenham were beaten 3-0 at Brentford.

The result was especially damaging for United, who were left to answer questions about their performance rather than celebrate their own changes over the summer.
