A person familiar with Thompson’s plans said he intends to sign with the Miami Heat once he clears waivers, though that has not been announced publicly by Thompson.
Thompson arrived in Dallas in a sign-and-trade meant to pair him with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. That plan unraveled after the Mavericks traded Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers before the 2025 trade deadline, and Irving later tore the ACL in his left knee.
Dallas missed the playoffs in both of Thompson’s seasons and has since undergone a major roster overhaul. The team also won the draft lottery after the Doncic trade and selected Duke freshman Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick.
Thompson, 36, won four NBA titles with the Warriors and is one of the league’s most accomplished 3-point shooters. He averaged 12.9 points in Dallas and has 2,899 career 3-pointers, fourth on the NBA’s all-time list.
