The remains of an ancient bridge, known as Nero’s Bridge, have emerged in Rome’s Tiber River due to weeks of virtually no rain. This historic structure is located near St. Peter’s Basilica and was originally built around 39 AD, although it is named after the Roman emperor Nero.
Archaeologists note that Nero is a significant figure in this area, as it is believed that the Apostle Peter was martyred near where the Vatican now stands. However, the bridge is considered to predate Nero's era, having been constructed by his uncle, Caligula.
Currently, the Tiber River's flow has dropped to below 80 cubic meters per second, which is about half of the historical average for the month of July. Officials from Rome's civil protection service indicate that this situation is contributing to a major water crisis in the city, exacerbated by extended dry periods following a winter with abundant rainfall.
