South Korea's military said North Korea launched about 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea on Thursday. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were fired from the North's capital region around 5 p.m. local time and flew about 300 kilometers each toward eastern waters.
The launches came a day after North Korea brushed off a U.S. decision to scale back military drills with South Korea. U.S. President Donald Trump had ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises before they began.
South Korea said it had strengthened surveillance and was coordinating closely with the United States and Japan. The South Korean presidential national security council urged North Korea to stop ballistic missile launches, and Japan's prime minister's office said it had detected a suspected launch.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said the reduced drills did not change what she described as their provocative nature. She denied Trump's claim that Kim Jong Un had responded to his request for a conversation, but said personal relations between Kim and Trump remained excellent.
