OpenAI introduces ChatGPT for Teens, promising a more age-appropriate chatbot
- OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its chatbot aimed at users ages 13 to 17.
- The teen version includes stronger content restrictions on topics such as suicide, self-harm, and romantic or sexual conversations.
- OpenAI said the tool is designed to support homework and studying in a way that encourages learning rather than simply providing answers.
- The company said it uses age-assurance systems to identify users who may be under 18 and place them into the teen version automatically.
- Parental controls are available for linked teen accounts, including quiet hours and limited safety notifications in high-risk situations.
- Child-safety advocates welcomed added protections but said the safeguards may still leave gaps, especially around emotional dependence and long-term memory.
OpenAI on Tuesday introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its chatbot aimed at users ages 13 to 17. The company said the product is meant to provide a more age-appropriate experience for the first generation of teenagers growing up alongside artificial intelligence.
The teen version adds stronger protections around sensitive topics, including suicide, self-harm, and romantic or sexual chats. OpenAI said it also adjusts the chatbot’s behavior so it does not suggest it has personal feelings, consciousness, or emotions, and it blocks content that could encourage teens to form unhealthy relationships with the system.
OpenAI said the teen chatbot is also intended to help with homework and studying in a way that supports learning rather than simply giving direct answers. The company said it uses age-assurance methods to identify users who may be under 18 and place them in the teen version automatically.
For linked teen accounts, parents or guardians can opt in to controls such as quiet hours and limited safety notifications in high-risk cases. Some child-safety advocates said the changes are a step forward, but they cautioned that important protections may still depend on parental settings rather than being enabled by default.
