Opening statements center on fact and fiction in the Tupac Shakur killing trial
- Opening statements began in the Las Vegas murder trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis, who is charged in the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur.
- Prosecutors said Davis did not fire the shots but helped plan the attack in retaliation for his nephew being beaten earlier that night.
- The defense argued that the prosecution's case is fiction and said Davis's past statements and book do not amount to reliable facts.
- Jurors heard audio from Davis's 2008 interview and saw evidence the state says supports its theory of revenge.
- The trial is expected to last about a month, and prosecutors said they plan to call dozens of witnesses.
Opening statements began in the Las Vegas trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis, who is charged with murder in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur. Prosecutor Binu Palal told jurors that Davis did not pull the trigger, but he did help plan the shooting after his nephew was beaten earlier that night.
Palal said the evidence would show Davis spoke about the case for years, including in a 2008 interview and in a 2019 memoir co-authored by Davis. The prosecution played audio from the interview and showed video of an earlier altercation outside the MGM Grand that it says led to the shooting.
Defense lawyer Michael Sanft rejected the state's account and called it fiction. He argued that Davis was not charged earlier because investigators did not trust his statements, and he criticized the original investigation as incomplete and biased.
Witnesses also began describing the night of the shooting. A retired Las Vegas police officer and another witness recounted events involving Shakur, Marion "Suge" Knight, and the drive-by shooting that followed. The trial is expected to last about a month.
