A Picasso etching stolen from a Milwaukee art gallery in 2018 has been found after a local landlord discovered it while clearing out a vacant apartment. Bill DeLind, the owner of DeLind Fine Art Appraisals, said he was contacted by police last week and quickly recognized the framed work as the missing "Torero" print.
The artwork was found by landlord Tim Dertz in an apartment that had been emptied after an eviction. Dertz said the print was hanging in a strange place and appeared to have been there for a long time, covered in dust. After showing it to an antique dealer friend, he was told it looked like the stolen Picasso and turned it over to police.
DeLind said the sticker from his gallery was still on the back of the frame, confirming it was his property. He said the print had been appraised at between $35,000 and $50,000 when it was stolen, and he believes its value may now be slightly higher because of the story behind its recovery.
Milwaukee police said the theft case remains under investigation. The artwork is still in police custody while DeLind and the client who had commissioned it for sale work with an insurance company to resolve the matter.
