A Pablo Picasso etching stolen from a Milwaukee art gallery in 2018 has been found after a local landlord discovered it while clearing out a vacant apartment. Gallery owner Bill DeLind said police asked him to look at the artwork after it was turned over to authorities, and he immediately recognized the print, titled "Torero."
DeLind said the framed piece still had his gallery's sticker on the back, matching the print that disappeared from DeLind Fine Art Appraisals in 2018. The landlord, Tim Dertz, said he found it hanging in an unusual spot and covered in dust, then showed it to an antique dealer friend who believed it was a Picasso and might be the stolen work.
After Dertz handed the artwork to police, officers contacted DeLind. He said he was stunned by the call and described the return as a full-circle moment. The Milwaukee Police Department said the case remains under investigation.
DeLind said the etching was one of 30 known signed copies of "Torero." He said it had been appraised at between $35,000 and $50,000 when it was stolen, and that its value may now be closer to $50,000 because of the story behind its recovery.
