The Polish Olympic Committee President Radosław Piesiewicz has been detained on suspicion of accepting bribes in connection with sponsorship agreements involving the crypto exchange Zondacrypto. Investigative reports have revealed that the CEO of Zondacrypto allegedly gifted Piesiewicz a luxury watch worth more than $40,000.
Earlier this year, Zondacrypto had promised crypto rewards to Winter Olympic medalists, but the exchange collapsed in April due to a liquidity crisis. This collapse raised concerns about the viability of such sponsorships and the integrity of the agreements made.
Polish Prime Minister Tusk has previously accused Zondacrypto of having links to Russian organized crime and intelligence agencies. In response to the situation, Poland’s Minister of Sport and Tourism stated that Piesiewicz had “tarnished the Polish Olympic spirit.”
