A growing number of U.S. public schools are taking a new approach to artificial intelligence: instead of simply banning it, they are bringing it into the classroom so students can learn how it works and where it fails.
That shift was on display in Charleston, South Carolina, where teachers and principals gathered ahead of the new school year and watched an AI tool produce a world map filled with obvious mistakes. The demo drew laughter and surprise as the system misspelled countries and misidentified regions.
Amanda Bickerstaff, founder and CEO of AI For Education, said the point was to show why students should not place too much trust in chatbots. Her group helps schools write AI policies and train teachers and students in what it describes as safe, ethical and effective use of the technology.
The broader goal, educators said, is to build AI literacy: preparing students for a future in which the technology is widely used while also making sure they do not rely on it to do their thinking for them.
