Scottie Scheffler took control of the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis by shooting a 9-under 61 in the second round. He birdied his first five holes, finished with 11 birdies and two bogeys, and reached 11 under overall to build a three-shot lead in the PGA Tour playoff opener.
Scheffler said it was one of the best starts he has had on tour. He tied the TPC Southwind course record while playing in 100-degree heat, and said he was able to keep the ball close on iron shots and make enough putts to keep the round going.
Viktor Hovland and Sungjae Im were tied for second at 8 under. Hovland shot a 64, and Im followed his opening 66 with another 66. Ludvig Aberg was a shot behind them at 7 under after a 65.
Jordan Spieth was at 6 under after a 69. The event is the first stop in the FedEx Cup playoffs, with attention focused on moving into the top 50 in the standings and advancing to next week’s BMW Championship.
