Some US adults are using AI for financial guidance but few trust it, Gallup poll finds
- About 1 in 5 Americans seeking financial advice turned to AI in the past year.
- Only about 3 in 10 U.S. adults have confidence in AI's expertise for managing money.
- Approximately 8 in 10 U.S. adults have confidence in financial advisers, but only a third sought advice from them.
- Younger generations are more likely to use AI for financial advice compared to older adults.
- Financial experts caution against fully trusting AI for financial guidance.
A recent Gallup survey conducted in partnership with Edward Jones reveals that some U.S. adults are utilizing artificial intelligence for financial guidance, though it is not regarded as a highly trusted source. Approximately 20% of Americans who sought financial advice in the past year have turned to AI, but only about 30% of U.S. adults express a significant level of confidence in AI's financial expertise.
The survey indicates a notable disparity between the sources Americans trust for financial advice and those they actually use. While 80% of U.S. adults have at least some confidence in financial advisers, only one-third of those seeking advice consulted a professional adviser, with 73% relying on their own internet research.
Younger adults are more inclined to use AI for financial advice, with about 25% of Gen Z and millennials seeking guidance from AI compared to 16% of Gen X and 7% of baby boomers. However, fewer younger individuals turned to professional advisers, with only 14% of Gen Z and 21% of millennials doing so, compared to higher percentages among older generations.
Experts advise that while AI can be a useful tool for understanding financial concepts, consumers should remain cautious and verify information with trusted sources. The responsibility for decisions made based on AI advice ultimately lies with the individual, as AI does not possess fiduciary responsibilities like certified financial planners do.
