Some US adults are using AI for financial guidance but few trust it, Gallup poll finds
- About 1 in 5 Americans who sought financial advice in the past year turned to AI.
- Only about 3 in 10 U.S. adults have confidence in AI's expertise for managing money.
- Younger generations are more likely to use AI for financial advice compared to older adults.
- About 73% of those seeking financial advice relied on their own internet research.
- Certified financial planners have a legal responsibility to provide fitting advice, unlike AI tools.
A recent Gallup survey found that while some U.S. adults are using artificial intelligence for financial guidance, it is not a widely trusted source. Approximately 20% of Americans who sought financial advice in the past year turned to AI, but only about 30% of U.S. adults expressed a significant level of confidence in AI's financial expertise.
The survey indicated that younger generations are more inclined to use AI for financial advice, with 25% of Gen Z and millennial adults having done so, compared to only 7% of baby boomers. In contrast, about 80% of U.S. adults have confidence in traditional financial advisers, yet only one-third of those seeking advice consulted a professional.
Experts caution that while AI can be a useful tool for understanding financial concepts, it should not replace professional advice. They emphasize the importance of verifying AI-generated information with trusted sources, as AI does not have the fiduciary responsibility that certified financial planners do.
