Some US adults are using AI for financial guidance but few trust it, Gallup poll finds
- About 1 in 5 Americans who sought financial advice in the past year turned to AI.
- Only about 3 in 10 U.S. adults have confidence in AI's expertise for managing money.
- Younger generations are more likely to use AI for financial advice compared to older adults.
- About 8 in 10 U.S. adults have at least some confidence in financial advisers.
- AI tools do not have fiduciary responsibilities like certified financial planners.
A recent Gallup survey conducted in partnership with Edward Jones reveals that while some U.S. adults are utilizing artificial intelligence for financial guidance, it is not a trusted source. Approximately 20% of Americans who sought financial advice in the past year turned to AI, yet only 30% of U.S. adults expressed a significant level of confidence in AI's financial expertise.
The survey indicates a disparity between the sources Americans trust for financial advice and those they actually use. About 80% of U.S. adults have confidence in financial advisers, but only one-third of those seeking advice consulted a professional. Instead, 73% relied on their own internet research.
Younger generations, particularly Gen Z and millennials, are more inclined to use AI for financial advice, with 25% of Gen Z and 21% of millennials turning to AI. In contrast, only 7% of baby boomers sought AI assistance. Experts caution that while AI can be a useful tool for understanding financial concepts, it lacks the fiduciary responsibility that certified financial planners hold, making it essential for users to verify AI-provided information against trusted sources.
