Some US adults are using AI for financial guidance but few trust it, Gallup poll finds
- About 1 in 5 Americans who sought financial advice in the past year turned to AI.
- Only about 3 in 10 U.S. adults have confidence in AI's expertise for managing money.
- About 8 in 10 U.S. adults have at least some confidence in financial advisers.
- Younger generations are more likely to use AI for financial advice compared to older adults.
- The survey indicates a disconnect between trusted resources for financial advice and those actually relied upon.
A recent Gallup survey, conducted in partnership with Edward Jones, reveals that some U.S. adults are turning to artificial intelligence for financial guidance, although it remains a less trusted source. Approximately 20% of Americans who sought financial advice in the past year utilized AI, but only about 30% of U.S. adults expressed confidence in AI's financial expertise, with just 3% trusting it a great deal.
The survey, which included responses from over 5,000 adults aged 21 and older, highlights a significant reliance on traditional financial advisers, with about 80% of respondents expressing at least some confidence in them. However, only one-third of those seeking financial advice consulted a professional adviser, while 73% relied on their own internet research.
Younger generations, particularly Gen Z and millennials, are more inclined to use AI for financial advice, with 25% of Gen Z and 21% of millennials reporting they sought AI guidance. In contrast, older generations tend to rely more on professional advisers, with 55% of baby boomers having consulted one. The survey underscores the importance of using AI cautiously and in conjunction with other trusted sources for financial advice.
