✓ Key facts
  • About 1 in 5 Americans who sought financial advice in the past year turned to AI.
  • Only about 3 in 10 U.S. adults have confidence in AI's expertise for managing money.
  • Younger generations are more likely to use AI for financial advice compared to older adults.
  • The survey found that 73% of those seeking advice relied on their own internet research.
  • Certified financial planners have legal responsibilities that AI tools do not.

A Gallup survey conducted in partnership with Edward Jones reveals that while some U.S. adults are turning to artificial intelligence for financial guidance, the level of trust in AI remains low. Approximately 20% of Americans who sought financial advice in the past year utilized AI, but only about 30% expressed a significant level of confidence in its financial expertise.

The survey indicates a notable disparity between the sources Americans trust for financial advice and those they actually use. While around 80% of U.S. adults have at least some confidence in financial advisers, only one-third of those seeking advice consulted a professional, with a significant majority relying on their own internet research.

Younger generations, particularly Gen Z and millennials, are more inclined to use AI for financial advice, with 25% of Gen Z and 21% of millennials having done so in the past year. In contrast, older adults tend to seek professional financial advisers more frequently, with 55% of baby boomers consulting one.

Experts caution that while AI can be a useful tool for understanding financial concepts, it should not be fully trusted without verification from other reliable sources. Unlike certified financial planners, AI does not have fiduciary responsibilities to provide tailored advice based on individual circumstances.
