South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service Upgrades System for Virtual Asset Fraud Compensation

- South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has launched a system overhaul to address compensation for financial fraud losses.
- The project, initiated on August 6, focuses on improving the compensation calculation system for virtual asset losses.
- Currently, compensation is calculated based on losses in Korean won, but reforms will introduce a compensation ratio for virtual assets.
- The new system will consider the type and quantity of virtual assets involved in fraud cases.
- When payments are suspended, the won-denominated exchange value of virtual assets will be included in the compensation calculation.
On August 10, it was reported that South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has embarked on a comprehensive overhaul of its system to address compensation for losses from financial fraud, including voice phishing involving virtual assets.
The FSS launched the "Financial Fraud Loss Compensation System Improvement Project" on August 6. This initiative aims to reform the existing compensation calculation system, which currently focuses on losses denominated in Korean won.
Starting from October this year, the new system will include virtual asset losses in compensation calculations. It will adopt a compensation ratio and take into account the type and quantity of virtual assets involved in fraud cases.
Additionally, in cases where payments are suspended, the won-denominated exchange value of the virtual assets will also be factored into the compensation calculations.
