A South Korean satellite has captured the first images of the moon's surface after a SpaceX rocket segment collided with it. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute's Danuri spacecraft flew over the impact site soon after the Falcon 9 upper stage hit the moon on Wednesday.
The images show a noticeable darkening of the terrain where the rocket struck, indicating a new crater was formed. SpaceX reported that the upper stage was placed on a collision course due to solar activity and gravity.
NASA expects its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to fly over the crash site next week to assess the aftermath of the impact. The Danuri spacecraft was launched by SpaceX from Cape Canaveral in 2022, along with a pair of private lunar landers.
