‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ broke the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ record for the biggest North American opening weekend with $360 million in ticket sales from theaters in the U.S. and Canada, according to Sony Pictures.
Sony had initially projected that ‘Spider-Man’ would net an estimated $355 million in its first weekend, just shy of the 2019 record held by ‘Avengers: Endgame’. However, the film experienced a stronger than expected performance on Sunday, ultimately surpassing the previous record.
Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, expressed pride in the achievement, stating that “records are made to be broken.”
The combination of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey’, which features actors Tom Holland and Zendaya, contributed to the largest weekend ever for North American movie theaters. The overall domestic box office is reported to be up over 15% from the previous year, with ticket sales exceeding $6.2 billion to date.
