‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ beats ‘Avengers: Endgame’ box office record

Sony Pictures said "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" broke the North American opening weekend box office record with $360 million in ticket sales from theaters in the United States and Canada. That total topped the $357 million record previously held by "Avengers: Endgame."
The studio had projected a $355 million debut, but stronger-than-expected Sunday attendance pushed the film past the mark. It is the fourth Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland, whose earlier Spider-Man film "No Way Home" opened with $260 million domestically during the pandemic.
Sony chairman and CEO Tom Rothman said the record would be a point of pride for the studio. Before "Avengers: Endgame," no film had opened above $300 million domestically.
The release of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "The Odyssey," which share cast members including Holland, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal, also helped drive the biggest weekend ever for North American movie theaters. Rentrak said domestic box office receipts are running more than 15% ahead of last year and have passed $6.2 billion so far.

索尼影业集团主席兼首席执行官汤姆·罗斯曼表示，这一纪录对公司来说意义重大。在《复仇者联盟：终局之战》之前，没有电影在北美首周末票房突破3亿美元。
《蜘蛛侠：Brand New Day》和《奥德赛》的上映也共同带动北美影院迎来史上票房最高的一个周末。Rentrak数据显示，北美整体票房比去年同期增长超过15%，截至目前已超过62亿美元。
