Sony Pictures said 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' finished its first North American weekend with $360 million in ticket sales, breaking the long-standing record held by 'Avengers: Endgame.' The studio had initially expected the film to come in slightly lower, at about $355 million, before stronger Sunday business lifted the result.
The previous North American opening record was $357 million, set by 'Avengers: Endgame' in 2019. Before that, no film had opened above $300 million domestically. Earlier record holders included 'Avengers: Infinity War' with $257 million and 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' with $247 million.
The new Spider-Man film is the fourth in the series starring Tom Holland. Sony said it played in 4,487 theaters. Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, said the company would take pride in the record for as long as it held it.
