Syrian authorities said a police investigator will be prosecuted after the death of Mohammad Ghamira, a detainee who had hemophilia. Officials said the investigator slapped Ghamira during an interrogation even though he had been warned about the medical condition.
Ghamira, 29, died in a hospital in Latakia on Sunday, shortly after being released from jail. He had been detained days earlier following an allegation of theft, according to local security officials.
Family members said they had told police that Ghamira had hemophilia, a blood-clotting disorder, and warned officers not to hit him. The case drew public anger in Syria and revived memories of abuse in detention under the former Assad government.
Maj. Gen. Ahmed Latouf, who heads the committee investigating the death, said medical experts found that Ghamira died from complications of a cerebral hemorrhage. He said the interrogator was referred to the public prosecution division and that disciplinary inquiries into other police personnel are continuing.
