Guatemalan prison authorities announced on Wednesday that they detected a tunnel under construction within the community area of the Pavón Rehabilitation Model Prison, where some inmates were attempting to escape. Jorge López Dellachiessa, the director of the penitentiary system, indicated that intelligence data led to the discovery of a hiding place where liquor was stored, but which was intended to be used as a tunnel for a presumed escape.
Regarding the size of the tunnel, the director stated that it was 'a bit large' and allowed several people to work inside. 'Obviously, the tunnel was intended to plan some escape of the inmates,' he added. Following the detection, a search was conducted in the prison, during which drugs and cell phones were also seized.
The army participated in the search, which also uncovered 387 sharp objects, 20 figures of Santa Muerte, two surveillance cameras, two Wi-Fi signal repeaters, four intercom radios, 20,000 packs of cigarettes, and 10 barrels of clandestine liquor, among other items. From the outside, it was possible to see inmates lined up for counting, one of whom was carrying a white dog.
