Turkey’s parliament has approved a bill that introduces a conditional pardon for thousands of Kurdish militants as part of a peace initiative with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The legislation was passed with a significant majority, with 468 legislators voting in favor and 88 against.
The bill will only come into effect after Turkish authorities confirm that the PKK has fully disarmed. This follows the PKK's announcement to end its armed campaign against the Turkish state and a symbolic disarmament ceremony held in northern Iraq.
The legislation includes provisions for the rehabilitation of PKK members and suspends some prison sentences for convicted individuals. However, those convicted of serious crimes such as intentional killings and those serving life sentences prior to 2005 are excluded from the benefits of this bill.
