U.S. stocks hit a record as oil prices fall and inflation cools slightly

U.S. stocks closed at record highs after a government report showed wholesale inflation rose 4.7% in the latest month from a year earlier, slower than June's 5.5% pace and a little better than expected. The move came as oil prices eased from recent swings, reducing some of the pressure on inflation expectations.
The S&P 500 rose 0.7% to 7,798.99, the Dow gained 69.72 points to 53,839.99, and the Nasdaq added 214.54 points to 26,803.03. Treasury yields also moved lower, and traders cut the implied odds of a Federal Reserve rate increase at its September meeting.
Rate-sensitive areas of the market, including real estate, outperformed, while Brent crude fell 2.1% to $87.07 a barrel. The combination of softer inflation data and lower oil prices was positive for stocks, while the drop in oil was negative for energy prices.
