U.S. health authorities said a multistate food poisoning outbreak has been linked to alfalfa sprouts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday it was aware of 55 illnesses nationwide, including four hospitalizations.
Cases have been reported in 15 states, including Minnesota and Wisconsin, where state officials had announced the outbreak earlier in the week and said they had documented more than three dozen illnesses. The CDC also listed cases in Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota and Washington.
Of 34 sick people interviewed, 26 said they had eaten alfalfa sprouts, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Officials said the outbreak involved multiple pathogens, including salmonella and different strains of E. coli. The sprouts were tied to Everything Sprouts, a Minnesota grower, and were sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands to restaurants and grocery stores, with no recall announced at the time.
The FDA said it had previously sent the company a warning letter after inspections found several concerns, including a leaking roof that was dripping water onto bean sprouts and workers' gowns.
