US retail sales fall sharply and unexpectedly after summer spending boost fades
- U.S. retail sales fell 0.6% in July, the biggest monthly drop since May 2025, after economists had expected a small increase.
- June retail sales were revised to a 0.2% gain, and the July decline followed spending gains in April and May tied to tax refunds.
- Excluding gas stations and auto dealers, retail sales fell 0.2%, while the control group used for GDP calculations dropped 0.4%.
- Sales at gas stations fell 0.9%, online sales fell 2.2%, and motor vehicle and parts dealers posted a 1.8% decline.
- The report, along with weak jobs data and softer consumer sentiment, raised concerns that consumer spending may be slowing, though some economists said it was too early to dismiss the consumer.
- For markets, the data is mildly negative for U.S. equities tied to consumer spending and retail, while the broader macro signal is neutral to slightly supportive for bonds if it adds to slowdown expectations.
U.S. retail sales unexpectedly fell 0.6% in July, the steepest drop in more than a year, after a spring surge helped by tax refunds faded. The Commerce Department said June sales were revised to a 0.2% increase, while economists had been looking for a modest July gain.
The weakness was broad in some categories but not all. Sales at gas stations, auto dealers, electronics and appliance stores, and online merchants all declined, with online spending taking a hit after last month’s Amazon Prime Day activity. Excluding gas stations and auto dealers, retail sales still fell 0.2%, and the control-group measure used in GDP calculations dropped 0.4%.
The report added to signs that consumer activity may be cooling. It came after weaker jobs data last week and a decline in consumer sentiment, though some economists said the labor market remains broadly balanced and higher-income households are still spending. Even so, several analysts cut their forecasts for third-quarter growth after the release.
The market implication is mixed but slightly negative for consumer-focused equities, since the data points to softer spending. At the same time, the weaker growth signal could be mildly supportive for bonds if investors interpret it as evidence that the economy is slowing.
