BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — The USS Abraham Lincoln will make a stop in Thailand after its exhausting deployment in the Middle East, Thai officials said on Wednesday.
The Lincoln provided support in the U.S. war against Iran, and its deployment included a record uninterrupted time at sea of over 250 days. Concerns about the prolonged deployment of the Lincoln increased following reports of deteriorating mental health among the crew and shortages of supplies, including food and hygiene products.
Thai Defense Ministry spokesman Surasant Kongsiri stated that the Lincoln will stop in Thailand next week to rest and recover before returning to its base in the United States. "The stop in Thailand is an opportunity for the crew to go ashore and relax," he told reporters at a press conference in Bangkok.
The Royal Thai Navy indicated that three ships from a U.S. aircraft carrier strike group are expected to make a brief stop in eastern Thailand for recovery, and no military exercises will be conducted during the visit.
