U.S. health officials have reported a food-poisoning outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts that has sickened individuals across 15 states. The outbreak has been documented with over three dozen cases in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the CDC has confirmed a total of 55 cases nationwide, including four hospitalizations.
The states affected include Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Washington. Of the 34 sick individuals interviewed, 26 reported consuming alfalfa sprouts, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
This outbreak is unusual as it involves multiple germs, specifically salmonella and different strains of E. coli, including Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, which can cause severe health complications. The sprouts are linked to Everything Sprouts, a Minnesota grower, which has not yet issued a recall for the product.
