Berkshire Hathaway's new CEO Greg Abel has utilized a significant portion of the company's cash reserves, investing $10 billion in Alphabet, Google's parent company, and repurchasing approximately $4.5 billion of its own shares. As a result, the conglomerate's cash holdings have decreased from nearly $400 billion at the end of March to $365.5 billion.
In its second-quarter earnings report, Berkshire Hathaway disclosed a profit of $25.667 billion, which is a substantial increase from the $12.37 billion reported in the same period last year. This increase was attributed to a strong paper gain in the value of its investments, particularly following a previous writedown in Kraft Foods.
Additionally, the company has resumed share buybacks after a hiatus of over two years, with the recent repurchase amounting to $4.5 billion, which analysts view positively. However, the total buyback was on the lower end of investor expectations, as predictions had suggested repurchases could range between $5 billion and $11 billion.
