Rescue efforts continued in dozens of cities and towns in western Colombia after a powerful earthquake struck the region, killing at least 111 people and leaving many trapped under the rubble of damaged and destroyed buildings.
The earthquake, which occurred on Monday, affected cities including Cali, Quibdó, and Pereira, with reports indicating that around 1,600 buildings were damaged or collapsed. Soldiers, rescue personnel, and families searched through the debris, removing large chunks of concrete by hand.
President Abelardo de la Espriella confirmed the death toll and stated that more than 2,700 people were reported missing by Monday night. Local authorities indicated that 80% of El Cairo, a town of about 7,000 residents near the earthquake's epicenter, was damaged.
De la Espriella traveled to Quibdó to assess the damage and announced the mobilization of military and police resources for the response. The U.S. State Department also announced financial support for emergency relief efforts, as governments across Latin America prepared to assist.
