The European Central Bank's latest survey indicates that cryptocurrency and stablecoin payments remain rare among euro-area businesses. According to the report cited by PANews from Bitcoin.com, just 0.2% of surveyed enterprises accept crypto or stablecoins online, while only 1% accept them at physical points of sale.
The survey covered all 8,205 enterprises in the euro area. Cash remains the most widely accepted payment method, with 92% of physical points of sale taking cash and 88% accepting bank cards. Mobile payment use has increased sharply, rising from 36% in 2024 to 68% in 2026.
The ECB said that payment automation should not erode cash's role as a viable payment option. The report also noted that, despite recognition among many financial institutions of the commercial value of digital assets, European payment service providers have moved slowly on crypto-related solutions.
For markets, the findings are neutral to mildly negative for the crypto payments narrative, since they highlight limited real-world adoption in Europe.
