On August 7, Ether.fi announced the separation of its restaking functionality from the main token weETH, resulting in the creation of a new token called weETHs. This change allows users to choose between holding weETH for standard staking yields or weETHs for restaking rewards, which come with additional risks.
Ether.fi currently manages approximately $3.55 billion in customer deposits, generating annualized fees of around $223 million and annualized revenue of about $51 million. The decision to split the tokens is part of ongoing discussions regarding Ethereum staking economics.
Recently, an Ethereum researcher proposed halting staking rewards when the staking ratio reaches 50%. Ether.fi's founder has publicly criticized this proposal, arguing that it could disadvantage smaller stakers and undermine products that rely on staking rewards.
