Hovland finished the round with six consecutive putts of 7 feet or longer, including four for birdie and two for par, reaching 15-under 195. Tour Championship newcomer Ryan Gerard trails by one shot at 14-under 196 after shooting a bogey-free 66.
Scottie Scheffler and Chris Gotterup, who have combined for five PGA Tour titles this season, sit three shots back at 12-under 198, tied with sentimental favorite Adam Scott and Ludvig Aberg, both of whom shot 65. Rory McIlroy remains in contention, shooting a 63 despite two bogeys to sit five shots behind at 10-under 190. Cameron Young is also within striking distance after a round of 68.
