But making 'Cathedral,' a graphic novel with an accompanying original album out Friday, was truly a family affair. He enlisted his godson Daniel Davies and his son Cody to collaborate on the album, which features spooky instrumental tracks evocative of some of his iconic classics, like the theme from 'Halloween.'
After a dream about an abandoned downtown Los Angeles church with an elevator that goes to hell, Carpenter turned to his wife, Sandy King, who is a comic book publisher, for help with the graphic novel. Carpenter expressed that the movie business has become very corporate, leading him to seek alternative, less expensive ways to stay creatively fulfilled.
In an interview, Carpenter noted that this project was unique as he usually creates music after directing a film. He described the idea of creating a graphic novel first as a new approach for him. The collaboration with family members allowed him to explore his artistic vision in a different format.
