Judge sides with MSG against Oakley, says former Knick could not prove he was assaulted at game
- A federal judge ruled in favor of Madison Square Garden in its long-running dispute with Charles Oakley over his removal from a 2017 Knicks game.
- Judge Richard J. Sullivan said Oakley produced no evidence that MSG security guards assaulted him.
- Oakley had been arrested after an altercation with security while sitting near owner James Dolan during a game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
- Several of Oakley's earlier claims against MSG had already been dismissed in 2020, leaving only the assault-and-battery claim on appeal.
- MSG said the court dismissed the claims in their entirety for a third time, while Oakley's lawyer said the case should be decided by a jury.
A federal judge has ruled for Madison Square Garden in its legal fight with former New York Knicks player Charles Oakley, finding that Oakley did not prove he was assaulted when he was removed from a game in 2017. Judge Richard J. Sullivan said Oakley offered no evidence to support his claim that MSG security guards assaulted him.
Oakley was handcuffed and arrested after a confrontation with security while he was seated near team owner James Dolan during a game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Earlier claims he made against MSG were dismissed in February 2020, and his assault-and-battery claim had remained on appeal.
In his ruling, Sullivan said the record, including video evidence and witness testimony, showed Oakley had a chance to leave the arena and was not pushed to the ground. MSG said the case had now been dismissed in full for a third time. Oakley's lawyer said the dispute should be decided by a jury and said the Second Circuit should send it back for trial.
