Judge sides with MSG in Oakley dispute, saying former Knick failed to prove assault at 2017 game
- A federal judge ruled in favor of Madison Square Garden in its long-running dispute with Charles Oakley.
- The court said Oakley did not prove that MSG security guards assaulted him when he was removed from a Knicks game in 2017.
- Oakley had been handcuffed and arrested after an altercation with security near owner James Dolan during a game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
- Most of Oakley’s claims had already been dismissed in 2020, leaving only an assault-and-battery claim after appeal.
- MSG said the case had been dismissed in full for the third time and said it was pursuing legal action against Oakley’s lawyer.
- Oakley’s lawyer said the ruling would be appealed again and argued that a jury should decide what happened.
A federal judge in New York ruled that Madison Square Garden defeated the remaining claim in Charles Oakley’s lawsuit over his removal from a Knicks game in 2017. Judge Richard J. Sullivan said Oakley had produced no evidence that MSG security guards assaulted him, and concluded that the record did not support his claim.
Oakley was handcuffed and arrested after a confrontation with security while sitting near Knicks owner James Dolan during a game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Earlier claims in the case had been dismissed in 2020, and after appeal the assault-and-battery allegation was the only one left.
MSG cited video and prior testimony in arguing that Oakley was not assaulted and was not forced to the ground. In its statement, the team said the claims had been rejected for a third time and said it was pursuing legal action against Oakley’s attorney.
Oakley’s lawyer said he disagreed with the ruling and expected to seek another appeal, arguing that conflicting accounts remain and that a jury should decide the facts.
