Kellogg announced on Thursday that it will eliminate artificial colors from all its cereals by the end of this year, moving the timeline up by a year. The company previously stated in August that it would remove synthetic dyes by the end of 2027.
To achieve this, Kellogg has identified fruit- and vegetable-based juices to provide the distinctive colors for cereals like Froot Loops and Apple Jacks. Additionally, the company is investing in new equipment to facilitate the transition to natural colors.
Kellogg is also taking steps to remove BHT, an artificial preservative, from the small number of cereals that still contain it. This move comes amid increasing consumer demand for foods made with simple and recognizable ingredients, as noted by Kellogg’s Chief Growth Officer Doug VanDeVelde.
The company has faced ongoing pressure to remove artificial ingredients from its cereals, a change it has already implemented in other countries. Retailers such as Target and Walmart are also enforcing similar policies to eliminate artificial colors from their products.
